Virtualisation - More with less...

What is Virtualisation?

Virtualisation is essentially a combination of concepts - Hardware and Software.
The goal of Virtualisation is to achieve more from your hardware platforms, save
costs and improve efficiency and resiliency.

There are various components to Virtualisation, dealing with Server and end user related computing. eg Your Servers and your workstations.

Virtualisation basically allows you to run numerous operating systems on top of one piece of physical hardware. This is particularly suited for running several operating systems on a single physical Server machine. Hence the more efficient use of Computing costs. Additionally, it allows you to ensure that you have instances of these environments located elsewhere, so they are protected if there is a critical failure.

Virtual machines are encapsulated into files, making it possible to save, copy and provision a virtual machine rapidly.

Full systems (fully configured applications, operating systems, BIOS and virtual hardware) can be moved in seconds (from one physical server to another), for zero downtime maintenance and continuous workload consolidation.

Efficiency and availability improvements

Virtualization dramatically improves the efficiency and availability of server and desktop resources and applications within your organization. Typical IT infrastructures are made up of individual servers with one application, resulting in multiple servers that are costly, underutilized and require a greater level of management.

Creating an automated infrastructure, built on a VMware virtualization platform, lets you respond to business demands faster and more efficiently than ever before, and provides you with the resilience to ensure business continuity.

VMware vSphere 4 delivers IT resources, applications, servers and even desktops when and where they are needed and companies who have deployed VMware have experienced savings of 50-70% on overall IT costs by consolidating their resource pools and delivering highly available computers. VMware's vSphere 4 virtualization platform is a fully proven architecture and has stood the test of time since its launch in 2001, and has been deployed by the majority of companies listed in the FTSE100 index.

Benefits of Virtualisation:

  • Partitioning - Multiple applications and operating systems can be supported in a single physical system. Servers can be consolidated into virtual machines on either a scale-up or scale-out architecture. Computing resources are treated as a uniform pool, to be allocated to virtual machines in a controlled manner.
  • Isolation - Virtual machines are completely isolated from both the host machine and other virtual machines.
If a virtual machine crashes, others are unaffected. Data does not leak across virtual machines, and applications can communicate over configured network connections only.
  • Encapsulation - Complete virtual machine environment is saved as a single file; easy to back up, move and copy; standardised virtualised hardware is presented to the application - guaranteeing compatibility.
