Veeam Backup and Replication incorporates both BACKUP (to guard against corruption or VM failure) and REPLICATION (providing instant failure on a separate virtual infrastructure) within the same product.

Veeam Backup and Replication is licensed on a per processor socket basis across all of the combined Virtual Host Machines. This ensures a backup or replica can be carried out on all Virtual Machines within the environment.

Veeam Backup sends a copy of each VM (Virtual Machine) to a Disk Target. This Disk Target can be directly attached storage on a server on the network, or as per the diagram above. Backups can be directed to a Disk Appliance.

Veeam Replication uses the same process as Veeam Backup - but the target for the replica of your Virtual Machines is a separate Virtual Environment. Veeam Replication is the ideal solution to help your business incorporate an off site DR solution.

Veeam Replication (and Backup) uses "change block tracking" which provides high performance for backup and reduces high bandwidth requirements to the DR site.
