Companies are having to store more and more data to remain competitive and in addition must retain copies of this data for longer periods of time. Data De-Duplication helps with the efficiency of data storage, reducing the amount of physical storage needed.

Data De-Duplication is a technology that provides the ability to strip out duplicate data stored within your computer system, not just files that have the same name but right
down to the bits and bytes that duplicated across many files.

For example... A good example of duplicate data is within Email systems. The manager of a company may email to all staff a 20Mb sale presentation. This could go to 100 staff, all of whom will keep a copy of this email (which includes the presentation file) within their own personal email inbox. This is the same file stored 101 times on the company server, which is then duplicated again within the backup process

A prime area for duplicate data files can be found within your backup data. It is quite common that your company will backup the same data over and over again each day, and store these backups for long periods of time in order to comply with your companies data retention policies.

The files that are backed up on a Monday are backed up again on Tuesday and so - doubling the space needed each day.
