At Basic we have worked carefully to define and strive towards maximising the results from the initiatives listed above.

However, whilst we decided to formalise our objectives, the truth is that Basic has been a green orientated Company for decades. That may surprise you, but even back in the 90's Basic recycled most of the cardboard boxes that Computer Hardware was shipped in.

Many years ago, we took steps to minimise printing. In those days it was simply a way to reduce cost and improve productivity as well as a moral preference. Yes, less time waiting for something to print, print again in a different way, and more time spent using information on screen.

These days, printing activities are an area with significant environmental impacts, whether from the chemicals and plastics used in Inks, or the paper sources. We therefore progressed this to further reduce these impacts and encourage our customers to do so as well.

We've been greener for years, through smarter eco-sensitive working practices:

• E-meetings/Web Meetings/Screen Sharing technologies: Lotus Sametime and Mikogo tools saved 3000+ business miles alone on 1 project. In fact, this has major benefits in our productivity and how fast we can support our Customers.
• More efficient working: Significant portions of remote working to reduce travel. Those people that live more than 25 miles away, work at home more than they come to the office.
• Some of us walk or cycle to work.
• Remote Support tools for access to customer sites rather than physical visits.
• Workflow and e-working leading to massive reductions in paper usage, including Marketing and other materials. We also use IBM Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino and IBM Lotus Sametime for internal communications. Whilst many people consider it simply an email platform, we use Lotus Notes and Domino heavily as an infrastructure and applications platform, with free email thrown in. Many of these systems, whether workflow, storage, access or process do not require printing.
• Virtualisation - leading to less use of materials, electricity and air-conditioning.
• Domino 8.x D.A.O.S removed need for increased San storage.
• Recycling orientated waste collections. Our rubbish goes to a recycling centre, where paper, plastics, tins and metals are sorted for recycling - thus improving the friendliness of the company.
• In 99% of machines. We use and were early adopters of flat panel and eco compliant screens.

• Minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring maximum efficiency.
• Minimise toxic emissions through the careful selection and use of transport and their power requirements.
• Actively promote recycling both internally and amongst its customers and suppliers.
• Source and promote products that minimise environmental impacts.
• Meet or exceed all environmental legislation that relates to the Company.
• Use an accredited program to offset greenhouse gas emissions generated by our activities.
